Hoping someone could put an age to this weight please

The best way to date that item David is to go by the other objects found in the area, they were used for a very long time, ie Roman/medieval/post ;)

The general rule of thumb with weights is that if the have a hole they can date back to the medieval period whereas if they have an iron loop then they are probably Roman but after saying it's post Roman it's very difficult to hone that date any further for as Dale says they were used for so long, they are cheap, practical and the shape functioned so they didn't really change ;)

Thanks geoff  and given the id s on the hammered the weight came from the same area ) it proberbly is medieval or later

As Geoff and Dale say these weights were used from Roman to post medieval, yours is a lead conical weight probably used as freestanding although used as steelyard as well  ;) if you look at Detector finds 7 by Gordan Bailey page 122, picture 15 you all see a match to yours.  ;) with the hammered you have had then you are probably on the money with medieval David.

Thanks for that , my picture is slightly miss leading its actually square on the base and has flat sides tapering to the top
