VICTORIA 1837-1901 Queen Victoria ruled between 1837-1901, and she is the longest reigning of any Monarch to date. Victoria was only 18 when she became Queen after the death of her uncle, King William IV..She ruled during a period of British industrial development, and an empire expansion to become the largest empire in the world. This decade became known as the Victorian Era. VICTORIA FLORIN Florins are also called two shillings. The first Victoria Florin was circulated in 1849 and it is known as the "Godless" florin because it is missing the words "DEI GRATIA" (For The Grace Of God). It was also Britain's first decimal coin being worth one tenth of a pound. It was replaced two years later in 1851 by the "Gothic" florin. The Gothic florins continued until 1887 but interestingly all the dates on them are in Roman numerals. The obverse of the "Godless" and "Gothic" florins were designed by William Wyon, Where as the reverses were designed by William Dyce. The "Jubilee head" designed by Joseph Edgar Boehm but it was engraved by L.C. Wyon. The "Old head" was designed by Sir Thomas Brock. The reverse was designed by Sir Edward Poynter,but engraved by George William de Saulles. 1849 "Godless" Silver, 11.3 grams, 28mm Diameter. 1851-1887 "Gothic" Silver, 11.35 grams, 30mm Diameter. 1887-1892 "Jubilee head" Silver, 11.3 grams, 29.5mm Diameter. 1893-1901 "Old head" Silver, 11.3 grams, 28.5mm Diameter.
