Title: Any Ideas? Post by: Dryland on June 13, 2013, 09:51:18 PM Tell me that this is what I think it is, and if it is what I think it is,
then can someone tell me how old it is ? If it's not what I think it is , then I must be wrong, but I'm sure it is what I think it is and so I must be right. But correct me if I'm wrong. ;D ;D I went out for an hour tonight and found it. It's complete and still has it's clanger. The second object is made of lead, it has a small hole in the end of it. I don't know what it is , but if somebody does know what it is, then could you tell me what it is ? if I guess what it is then I might be wrong, on the other hand I might guess right and then I wouldn't have to ask you what it is as I'd already know. But I don't and therefore I'm asking , what is it ? I'd rather have the right answer than the wrong answer. but If you don't know, then you're in the same boat as me. although I don't own a boat, maybe you do, and if you don't own a boat the I can't be in it , unless you borrowed a boat. I'd rather you didn't as I get sea sick. ;D Title: Re: Any Ideas? Post by: matthewbullingham123 on June 13, 2013, 10:01:56 PM crotal bell?

Title: Re: Any Ideas? Post by: anthonyjay on June 14, 2013, 09:07:10 AM I think it's a small coin along side a Crotal bell
Title: Re: Any Ideas? Post by: Dryland on June 14, 2013, 11:26:07 AM ;D ;D thanks people. I just can't find a picture of a crotal bell with the same
suspension loop to date it. Title: Re: Any Ideas? Post by: cardiffian on June 14, 2013, 09:18:20 PM I have never seen one with that sort of suspension loop. Very unusual. When I was involved with Yeovil MDC I booked a guy to give a talk on crotal bells. He is one of the foremost experts on the subject and is always eager to record new makers marks or variations etc. If you were interested I can ask permission to give you his e-mail address. I am sure he would be interested to see it and give you information on it.
Title: Re: Any Ideas? Post by: Dryland on June 14, 2013, 09:24:37 PM Yes that would be great, although theres no makers mark or number on it, still
even if it's 20th century it would be nice to know Title: Re: Any Ideas? Post by: cardiffian on June 14, 2013, 09:28:57 PM If it were unusual he would still be interested despite there being no makers initials. I will send him an e-mail and get back to you when he replies to me.
Title: Re: Any Ideas? Post by: cardiffian on June 14, 2013, 09:38:03 PM E-mail now sent to him. His name is Graham Palmer by the way.

Title: Re: Any Ideas? Post by: cardiffian on June 14, 2013, 10:07:25 PM thanks for the help Cardiffian . Your welcome DrylandTitle: Re: Any Ideas? Post by: Dryland on June 15, 2013, 12:15:07 AM Silky it certainly looks like a handle off something, although its only
2 inches long and the hole on the front is only about the width of a cocktail stick. Before anybody gets the boot in I am talking about the lead thingy ;D ;D Title: Re: Any Ideas? Post by: Chef Geoff on June 15, 2013, 09:42:22 AM Good shout Silky, yep its the handle from a toy gun circa 1910. The link below shows the type though that one has a different handle, I've got a few somewhere that have the same as yours, I'll see if I can dig them out.

Title: Re: Any Ideas? Post by: Dryland on June 15, 2013, 05:01:00 PM Thanks again Silky and Geoff, how on earth did you I D that.
Now then how about a date for the crotal bell ? Title: Re: Any Ideas? Post by: Chef Geoff on June 15, 2013, 07:13:23 PM Most crotal bells are only from the late Georgian early Victorian period and I'm afraid yours looks quite a lot newer than those, the hanger looks to be made to allow a strap to pass though and would imagine it was only one of many on a horses harness. :-\

Title: Re: Any Ideas? Post by: Dryland on July 28, 2013, 11:17:31 PM Cheff help I'm a little confused, the metal thingy in the above photo ,which I found in June
you and Silky I D it as a toy gun handle. I don't know if you've got September 2013 issue of Treasure Hunting yet. On page 9 Upper right corner , there,s a picture of an identical one sent in by a gentleman from South Wales who found one close by an iron age enclosure,. He sent the photo in for them to compare against a "Late iron age " or middle "Bronze age" object. I personaly can't see much of a resemblance, and I suppose this object could have been dropped by an Iron Age settlement at any time. Any thoughts? or has anyone else any thoughts on this ? Title: Re: Any Ideas? Post by: The Doc on July 29, 2013, 04:41:10 PM I think they may be talking about this type of object:
