Anthony, most of these are described as medieval, scallop shell design, it would have contained holy water that was collected on a pilgrimage then poured on to the fields in hope of a good harvest, or the water was given to someone who was not well enough to make the pilgrimage. if you google them there is loads of info about them and their uses.

Definitely an ampulla and most had a scallop shape on one side, they are hard to date but the other side if you can find info on it would probably give you a better idea, a lot were taken over to Spain to be filled. As Mark said they were sprinkled onto fields in the hope of improved crops a bit like a belief in magic in a way.

cheers,to be honest it wend in my pouch with the general bits and bobs until i got home Shocked
went back for a hr detecting and only had 2 musket balls but sure they must be a hammy or two there,i gave the musket balls to the farmer and he said i can go on the grass as well Grin bit long at min but will go back after first cut and try again, can i ask what do you lot think in your mind when you are swinging the detector and the land is is quiet but you are sure someone must have dropped a coin or two in the past,i personally start thinking i am looking for a item that may or may not have been dropped and then be lucky enough to walk over it,sounds daft but i find that thought therapeutic when not getting many signals and helps me keep in the zone  Wink
