Title: My first medieval Seal Matrix
Post by: Da Monkey on November 10, 2013, 07:34:19 PM
Found this one at the weekend, my first medieval one :)  FLO says 14th Century, took an impression after carefully cleaning it up, no writing (which I would have liked) but looks like a shield with a star in the top left corner, found at Forest of Dean, any ideas ?

Cheers guys, well happy with that one, next one's gotta have some text on it LOL ;)

Good to meet up Gav, it were a bit muddy though...  we have met at a few DW rallies, but quite a while back. I think you were using an explorer on a whites stem the last time we met up, I'm sure it was yourself (?)

Great find Da monkey ;) its a very nice impression....... its most probably a merchants mark to identify themselves, that proves very hard to trace the owner, shame really.

Thanks for the comments guys and interesting that it could be a Merchants mark, pity its not going to be an easy if not impossible trace :(

Yeah, another ticked off the bucket list Neil, I guess its got to be a Sceatta of any description next, never had a sniff of one of those, mind you I'd settle for another nice silver one of these matrixes... ;)   Or even a nice full eddy groat like Shungav's, that ones been on my bucket list for years...

Yes MrMayo yours was a cracker, this one is a bit rougher condition I'm afraid, funny how I commented to you that I hadnt had one to date :) .   Perhaps I ought to tell you more about that hoard of gold coins I haven't found yet either, wonder if it'll pop up in a couple of weeks time, you never know LOL ;)

I can recommend the modelling clay that jelida recommended, I found one in hobbycraft called "PRIMO SCULPY!" that seemed the softest there and you can bake it hard for a permenant copy :)  Job done, all I need now is that next matrix to use it up ;)

Was good to see you Kev, will bump into you at a DW rally again soon I hope.

Hoping to get to the one this weekend, but is 50/50 at the moment due to work and home commitments :(

Was quite chuffed withe the florin, not had many of those true florins, usually get the two shilling variety, its got a deposit on one side of it thats a bit relucant to shift, not tried that hard yet though, will have a proper go this week, did you get any luck after ?
