Hi folks
I see the term "Green waste" cropping up quite often,
What is this, and any tips on dealing with it.

Hi "Artcat" green waste as I've been informed is a mixture of pretty obnoxious things which can include hypodermic needles,bits of about everything !! including human waste.
So,for me its a definate NO go area,you just don't know what your digging into,or what "nasties" your picking up on your clothes .👎

What are the farmers thinking, allowing this on their land.

Initially it all seemed like a good idea. Re-cycled wood chippings spread over the field and rotting down.
Unfortunately the less scrupulous manufacturers thought it a good idea to buy in much cheaper rubbish like chip board complete with metal fittings. The worst of the lot is insulation with foil still attached. Even hospital waste has been reported.
Once this sort of stuff has been spread you can forget detecting the field forever. It's a problem many of us have come up against and most of the Farmers don't realise til it's too late.

Avoid it like the plague

Val's reply was spot on and mirrored my experiences when I lost a lovely farm to the dumping of green waste. The fields looked as though they had become the dumping ground for reject MFI kitchen furniture and every signal produced rubbish.

If ever there was vandalisation of the environment, this was it.

Nothing green about it  ;D it appears to vary how contaminated it is up and down the country...my site that I get quality brooches from has waste put on but luckily it's just foil and throw away razors mainly and still detectable. ;) There was a petition going to ban it, not sure what's happened to that Lol.

I understand that farmers have been told to stop using it and councils waste facilities to stop supplying them.

I was reading an article the other day about the practice of 'shoddy' - putting old shredded clothes on the land to rot down - it's one of the reasons we find so many buttons when we detect - in many ways it was the green waste of the time......

Though I'd rather find buttons than IKEA fittings....

If anyone is interested here is an article that was debated in the house of commons 4 years ago and here is one sentence out of it:-“Farmers, in the belief that they are doing the right thing for the community, are being conned, and have their land contaminated with plastic, aluminium, glass and all kinds of other products, containing chemicals and substances which not only destroys the appearance of the countryside but also puts at risk the health of wildlife, our waterways and our human beings.​
Thousands of tonnes of this toxic rubbish, containing syringes, bottles, gloves, toys, glass—some of which will not decay for hundreds of years—are being tipped on the fields each year.
