Title: A first for me.
Post by: Doug on September 18, 2014, 07:39:13 PM
Geoff (Chef) and I was discussing Saxon, Celtic and the like found in Somerset over the weekend at the rally.

I said I had only ever found one artefact that was Saxon in Somerset, then lo and behold in-between all the decimal and pre-decimal coins today up pops this Sceatta.

Amazing!!!!!

Rest of the finds.

I don't often find a complete complete nose ring for a bull.

Thanks Dale, interesting description?

"The obverse figure is described in the literature as having large curled moustaches, and Metcalf comments "Careful inspection of the Tilbury find shows that they spring from the face, i.e. they cannot be understood as long hair curling outwards from the back of the head." However, the breasts depicted on some of the coins, including the present one, suggest that the figure is female."

No I can't see the bird either .......... ???

Reverse.

"Linear bird with curled wing striding right, pecking berries in foliage."

Its shown a little clearer on this one mate, the birds head is 1 o'clock then work down the body, its foot is 7 o'clock
