Well done Paul, as you say it's in lovely condition for it's age Wink
It belongs to a series that have no known monier and so are just marked "Anonymous" and dated between 210 and 146 BC, so a lot older than any stater you could find  Smiley

Very nice Paul.  I think I'd rather have that one than your mates gold sovereign. What lovely condition it's in. Great find.

Lovely coin Paul.  One of the best condition Republicans I've seen as a detecting find.

The reverse design is "Dioscuri galloping right".

I must admit not knowing who the Dioscuri were, but Wikipedia was my friend:

"In Greek and Roman mythology, Castor and Pollux or Polydeuces were twin brothers, together known as the Dioscuri.Their mother was Leda, but Castor was the mortal son of Tyndareus, the king of Sparta, and Pollux the divine son of Zeus, who seduced or raped Leda in the guise of a swan (Greek myths concerning divine sex are often vague on the issue of female consent). Though accounts of their birth are varied, they are sometimes said to have been born from an egg, along with their twin sisters Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra."

I just remembered, only yesterday, on Carlings post, I said unusual coins  usually come in 3's, who going to be next. ??

Well, there you go then Paul,  it was you.  Grin Grin

Congrats on a great find.

Sadly, it doesn't make it scarce - it's a scarce find in that condition for the UK as of course it was in circulation for 100 years or more before it came here (just imagine what stories it could tell), but they pumped these out.

I remember paying abour £40 for one in Oxford as a student and after that I've paid anywhere between £20 and £50 for similar examples when I had them. It doesn't ahve enough diagnostic features to easily tie it down to a tight date, but as the ROMA letters in a box are raised rather than incuse then it's not from the earliest series, but looking on wildwinds they had this type which seems to match it:-

Anonymous Denarius. Italian mint, 206-195 BC. Helmeted head of Roma right, X behind. / Dioscouri right, rostrum tridens (prow of a war galley) below horses, ROMA in linear frame in ex. Cr114/1, Syd 244.
