full volume ,as little discrimination as you can, sensitivity as high as you can handle it,threshold just audible(adjust your headphone volume so u dont go deaf when u hit a fishing weight) ,notch on zero, variable tones and all metal for an extra inch or two depth on the gold rings.
good luck ,now hit those beaches (not mine obviously lol )

To answer the question...No auto is too reactive to slight changes in mineralisation and so will always err on the side of caution, as Mike says try it at around the 11 o'clock position but if that's still too noisy don't be scared of turning it down even to the 1 or 2 o'clock area. The Sov is a deep machine and even at these settings will still give good depth, as you gain experience of the blips and squeaks you'll find you will be able to increase your sensitivity. I tend to use mine at around the 11 o'clock position most of the time as standard.
Ultimately on the GT you are looking for beaches that you can run full sensitivity, all metal, in pinpoint mode. In that configuration the GT gets ultimate depth, unfortunately places where you can use it are limited.
