looking for some experiance on differant coils for the explorer series of machines.
what do you think is the best all round coil.
ie standard 10.5,pro coil,SEF 10X12 or SEF 12X15.

i have the ex 11  i bought the  dd 11 inch coil the one fitted to the new e trac, my old coil was the 1050, which has heen a great coil, the new coil is def better on pinpointing, and i def have improved my finds rate, some of the depth,s i have recovered targets is unbeilable, all this without changing any settings, my advice stay away from the large coils waste of time regards john pugh

I can say without prejudice that at present the SEF 15 x 12 coil i run
on my Explorer II is by far the best i have ever used its a dawdle to pinpoint
and finds very small items at extreme depth i can also run it at maximum sensetivity.

This applies to inland and wet sand beaches so this larger coil is absolutely not a waste of time....and just like john we have the finds to prove it.

Although a little heavier than the stock coil the balance is much better and even being one of the older brigade i can swing this coil all day long.

Regards to you ...i will add that the new pro coil by minelab is about equal so both good coils PaulB.

Hiya Ian....It performs better than the stock coil on plough...
but as you probably are aware minelabs do not like air under the coil
and deffo lose a bit of depth therein when the ground is very uneven..PaulB.

hi ian paul, when i said the large coil was a waste of time i did word that wrong,  most people today seem to stick to the 10 and half to 11 inch coils, which do an excellent job,  the one disadvantage of the bigger coil is the extra weight,which for me  when i did try one made my arm ache, no comments about no muscles,  please.
 so hope ian you bare that in mind,  i think the fifteen inch coil in the right hands would be an assett in ground coverage last thing i recently dug a target at 20 inches with my dd coil, the target was an inch long i think if you can go to it buy the two regards john

hi john i agree with you about the weight problem on the explorers i have a standard coil on mine and i found it heavy to use i tried a bungy cord thing and found it was too restricting so i hip mounted my explorer just the job a stem with the coil on the end and control box over my shouler using a laptop case strap so i think i can handle the
15 X 12 easily with this set up. Once i set it up and try it i will post my findings here perhaps it will help others with this weight problem.

hi richy i will do that as soon as posible the funny thing is six of us went metal detecting today and a few of us got the same bags. guess what ;D one of my mates have got my detector and i have got his so we decided to charge each others batteries ready for next weekend so i cannot have a play with it until we go again. :P

proven test the new 8x6  sef can pick up as deep as the new pro coil .
it has been tested by a mate of mine by two very trustworthy and battling against each other to see who could pick out the iffy signals and who couldn't . 3 the sef picked out the pro coil did not so think before you buy .
i own 2x 14x10 detech 16.5detech 1050's x2 a 800 minelab the slimline.12x10 sef thats real good easier for small targets roman,
15x12 well thats a real good one.
18x15 beach coil for good deep stuff no good on plough.
so if you have real good sites don't buy too big get new baby sef 8x6.
should sell for 129 there is a code to say to joan allen something like detect0010

sefs are good value and also a bit cheaper and really good the platipus

I have an Explorer SE and changed to the SEF 15X12 coil. My finds rate has increased although I get a lot more small rubbish. It is heavier but I still find I can manage 5 or 6 hours without too much problem. I treated myself to the Garrett pinpointer probe for Christmas and that has been great - it really shows where a deeper find is in the hole and also quickly finds tiny bits in the excavated soil

I use the pro coil very pleased with it, very light, the SEF is to heavy for me, wish I had the strength to use one.  :)

they all work but if you don't walk over goodies it won't find them think before parting with money do you need it yet (some don't work no better but cover more ground)
i changed to a detector that suited my needs rather than coil.
