Detectingwales Rally 46 - Stags and Birthday Boys!

It was the first Rally of 2012 today and the Detectingwales.com family headed for Rally 46 a mile or so away from what was once the largest Medieval city in Wales!

It was an early start for Mark and I, and the time flew in a journey full of Detecting, Stevie Wonder and Pythonesque chat. We arrived at 8.30am and promptly set about orgainsing the parking for over 90 eager detectorists.

Today saw members travelling from Derby, Northampton, Somerset, Hereford, Swindon and all over Wales to a site set within the glare of an Iron Age hill fort. We welcomed numerous new members including GJH, Lady Luck, Groundhog, The Ferret, Mr Sub Atomic, Patrick, Ray, Triker, Swingit, NBates, Kingfisher, Celtic Spikey, Paul B and more. I hope you enjoyed your day out guys and you are more than welcome back anytime.

Today was long standing member Pipster's Stag Rally - although I never saw him all day and failed to have a non-alcoholic beer with him to celebrate, but I am sure we will make up for that at the wedding.

It was also the birthday of our very own Richard 16.5DD and I later learnt also Mr Stampy and newbie Patrick. Happy Birthday to one and all!

Following the normal go here, go there and please avoid the extremely large brown bull - we were off!

The first find of the day fell to myself in the shape of a William III sixpence that had been sadly chopped in half recently by the plough and is pretty much blank with curiously two holes on it. The first silver of the year is welcome though and I gratefully took it with open arms.

My next find was a bit more special and took the "hammered monkey" off my back straight away in the form of a Lizzy threepence {I think?}. The profile is in lovely condition and it would have been perfect apart from a bit missing. It turned up where I was speculating the old road to the church was so I was well pleased.

Other finds started arriving including a couple of Roman grots to The Big Ox, Proconsul and also Richard. Joining in the Roman theme up stepped Charles aka Rollingstone with an early roman fibula sadly missing its spring. His good lady Jan had a smattering of finds including some 1800's dated pottery.

A couple of chaps called Pat and Ray had travelled down from Derby today and were rewarded for their effort with a pair of hammereds. Really nice to chat to you guys and feel free to join us anytime.

The next hammered I saw was a beast of a Lizzy sixpence in lovely condition by GJH I think. A coin that I got the feeling his detecting partner will be hearing about all the way home.

YsbytyMike was also in amongst the hammereds but I never got to see it - photo please mate. Melonhead also had a nice item that I haven't got the foggiest on, but it certainly "Has an age to it!"

Rookypair turned up an usual item that looks for all the world like its a hammered coin that someone has tried to turn into a dome - hope it is - try a bit of foil on it. They also had with them a stunning silver ring that Bob had made for his good lady out of a wax seal intaglio they found on a DW rally in the summer. I'll post some pics tomorrow.

One of my favourite finds of the day went to I think Chris429 and was his first coin of any age in the shape of a Irish issue Hibernia copper George II - it was in good nic as well and he was rightfully pleased with it. His detecting buddy had a Tudor Rose belt stud or brooch as well that was an interetsing find to make.

Proconsul found the best buckle I saw of the day in a huge spectacle shaped 1600's one with the pin still intact. I think most people had the normal musket balls, coppers and general parts of Georgian/Victorian life, but some of the fields were a bit on the quiet side.

IFINDNOTHING aka Mark lived up to his name with what must have been a heart stopper, looking like a silver dragon, but in fact turning out to be a key fob made in China! Good on you though mate for taking it as a laugh - you had no choice really!

I left at about 3.30 as I have a Moroccan dinner date tonight and I needed to clean the days mud off!

Thanks go as usual to the farmer and his spuds, TaffLaff for finding the land and as always you lot for making the day enjoyable. A quick shout out to DW stalwart Roman Ray who managed to break his ankle last night pretending to be Jane Torvill and then got into a punch up in A&E! You were missed today mate, but well done on sorting out the bullies!

We have numerous sites lined up for 2012 - some of which are new and other revisits to the better sites. I look forward to seeing you all in a field soon.

hi, thanks for a great day again, i had a nice eddy hammerd, not sure which eddy but a couple of helpful lads took pics of it,. also had a very grotty roman[ i think] and a hat pin - victorian i would guess, looking forward to the next one
