Title: A hoard straggler 6 years on
Post by: celticspikey on June 05, 2012, 08:58:29 AM
The story of my Henry VIII groat which I found recently and is shown for ID in beat the doc, begins back in September 2006, when I obtained some new fields to search. The field in question is approximately 35 acres lying between two Wiltshire villages of ancient origin. On searching the field I could see the sure signs of previous occupation, dark soil with a variety of broken pot shards, after a few hours I had found various buckles, lead seals, and coins of various dates. It also become clear to me that a large pipe lay beneath the field running alongside the lane that flanked the field, as my Minelab gave a constant signal when I followed the course of the pipe. However it was on the edge of the pipe signal that I got my first signal that led to my hoard , upon digging a few inches produced a silver Henry the VIII groat , within a few steps another Henry  groat , unfortunately  my day had to end there and gave me time at home to examine the coins and wonder just what else lies close to this pipe, just a couple of casual losses, a hoard of hundreds, or maybe a purse drop, those of you lucky enough to have found such finds would know how the mind fires into overdrive.  However it would have to wait till another day!  Yes you guessed it the next day I was back on the field after showing the coins to the farmer who was very pleased I had rescued these from his field. Over the next couple of days I had another Groat,  and a shilling of Edward the VI, also a signal that produced a silver finger ring and upon examination had, believe it or not  a half groat lodged in the centre of it ! Clearly this had recently been disturbed from its original resting place. The coins and ring was duly placed with (FLO) Katie hinds at Salisbury museum and awaited the process of the treasure act.  As expected they fell under the treasure act and eventually were valued and acquired by Salisbury museum. Since then I have regularly visited the field and area of hoard and despite finding other finds have never found any more coins I could put down to the hoard, despite a couple of years ago when the farmer informed me some work was to be carried out on maintenance of the pipe that I mentioned this was exciting news as it involved relining the pipe and more importantly digging big holes, when the day came for the work to start it only involved relining the existing water pipe and not digging it all up as I hoped for, merely digging two trenches at 100 meter intervals to cut pipe and resleeve  and unfortunately  no other associated finds  were made. I now jump forward 6 years to present day when a couple of weeks ago the field was ploughed slightly deeper than normal and seeded promptly fortunately I am permitted to search as long as I want, so a couple of days ago I had a few hours wandering the field and eventually tried the area I found the hoard which resulted in a strong  signal  and subsequent finding of another groat shown in beat the doc just recently so as I was beginning to think I had found all that was  there up popped another henry groat , my feeling is that it is a purse hoard !! or could it be a larger hoard possible disturbed in the 1950’s when the pipe was laid I might never know but either way I think it warrants asking the farmer to strip of some soil and move it away from the dreaded pipe to enable a more detailed search i will update if this happens later in year when crops are out. As yet the farmer has not seen the most  recent coin so after showing him I will inform Katie hinds (FLO) at Salisbury museum, meanwhile will get couple more searches in to find all the gold ones!!!!!
The coins found so far are as follows
 1 x Henry VIII groat                                               spink 2369
1 x Edward VI groat (in name of Henry VIII)     spink 2408
1 x Edward VI groat (in name of Henry VIII)     spink 2409
1 x Edward VI half groat with silver ring             spink 2411
1 x Edward VI shilling                                               spink 2468
Plus of course most recent one found yet to be recorded (shown in photo identified as spink 2403.)
Hope you have enjoyed my story. Be lucky.

As promised an excellent story, and to find another hoard coin 6 years on just illustrates the point that it is always worth re-visiting those 'old glory' sites as I like to call them.   Incidentally well done for being responsible with the hoard and the straggler. :)

Cracking hammereds and a good story. Lets hope you keep finding 'stragglers'. My first roman silver was a Republican denarius of Paulus Lepidus and came from alongside a pipeline. I reckon that was brought to the surface when they laid the pipe.
