Title: How close can you detect?
Post by: SimonH on January 09, 2010, 02:04:12 PM
I'm 99.9% sure that I can get permission on a farm that has the following :

Medieval House Platforms
Cairns
Circa 1700 Farmhouse & Barns (ruins)
Circa 1675 Original Farmhouse (occupied)
Early Medieval Inscribed Stone
Early Christian Monument

How close can I detect to scheduled monuments etc?  is there a certain radius or does id depend on each one?

I doubt if the Farmhouses or the house platform are scheduled, The protection of each site is done on a case by case basis, ie I have a Roman grave on one site that has only a 10m exclusion zone. The farmer should have a copy of the scheduling with all the details on it, but A rule of thumb is that those things above ground have less of a protected area than those buried.

Chef is right it depends on the individual scheduled area. It can be anything - the farmer will have had notice or failing that contact your FLO who should be able to tell you.

Sounds an awesome site Simon

cheers
Neil

Sorry about that Simon, did it wrong  http://www.coflein.gov.uk/ (http://www.coflein.gov.uk/)   and http://jura.rcahms.gov.uk/NMW/start.jsp (http://jura.rcahms.gov.uk/NMW/start.jsp) good sites two check whats scheduled. If you zoom in on the map to the area you want to check it will show you the scheduled  sites, not the most acurate ,but at least it tells you if it's scheduled.

I can detect on the field behind Caer Mead Villa the funny thing is the boundary hedge is actually over part of the Villa, this does'nt make sense ???  but I still have'nt found any Roman on it, mind you the base of the Villa is about 6 foot down because the farmer ploughed all the soil from the fields arround it to cover it up.

Bugger :'(

as a last resort, you can contact Cadw and give either the map coordinats or address, and they will tell you whether the site is scheduled.

The farmer will also have his field system drawn up by the ministry showing all schedule and unschedule monuments.

To be sensible, and this is purely my own opinion, stay at least 100metres away, or if the site is enclosed wihin a fenced field, keep out of it.

Hope this helps, I see someone has sent you links as well. Good hunting  ;)

I'll check with the farmer then.  Theres plenty of places to detect there without me worrying about the scheduled areas just yet.  I have found out which are scheduled from the links simon c gave me :)
