Title: Medieval Ring
Post by: celticspikey on May 09, 2016, 06:49:41 PM
Hi guys, and girls.. For the last few weeks I have been waiting for a field to be rolled and seeded and today on arrival the farmer was busy doing the job in hand. After a quick chat to the landowner where by he informed me that he had a couple cold callers requesting permission to detect at the weekend, needless to say they were not successful...!! Anyway here are my finds for a few hours searching a good selection of finds with a bit of roman as well unusually for this field though. In the centre there are 2  dagger chapes with a spur rowel above. Anyway on to the main attraction up popped this superb condition bronze Merchant/Signet ring which I guess dates to 15th-16th cent ? just how it came from a ploughed field with no damage I will never know, well I expect it has been laid just out of reach until very recently. Hope you enjoy looking at it half as much as I have... oh by the way the initial letter is it a "P" or an "R" I was hoping "P" as its my initial but I'm easy Lol.

Now that's a good few finds for a quick search Paul. Looks like an 'R' to me on the ring, which is an amazing find. Well done, once again.

The Wiltshire soils are kind to coins and artefacts Jamie, compared with other counties ;) with regard to D/W rallies my finds are few and far between UNFORTUANTLY, come to that most rallies I've detected on over the years I've not done well in comparison to my own permissions but that's good for other rally detectorists, that's detecting for you Lol... ;)

Fantastic items again.

it' looks like an 'R' to me which is my first initial :)!

I find I don't do too well on rallies, mainly because I don't grid and I talk too much.....

Wow, that's something super special. To me, that has more of a specialist history than a coin.
Only my opinion, but a coin was manufactured to be circulated and that ring was made and engraved for just one person.
Whoever it was made for had a life and history that was unique. If only we were able to follow that journey up to the loss of the ring.
Incidentally, I think the letter is a P.
If you look at picture 4 it is almost certainly a P, and I think the embossing shows a disjointed decoration that is not connected to the inscribed letter P.
Either way, its a magnificent find. Well done

Thanks for your comment b.buoy, I agree with you on its manufacture over a coin. I shall examine the ring again! as I said I initially thought it was a P, for the reason you have highlighted  ;)

do you think it was originally a P then overtime it was changed to an R? maybe handed down on death to the person with R name? just thought i`d throw that in there.:)

Fantastic finds, as usual. I found a medieval ecclesiastical seal recently but unfortunately, not in quite as good condition as your seal. Surprised the plough didn't have the best of it. Definitely well saved.
