Title: Part of a Roman coin? Post by: Smoo on September 23, 2016, 08:45:30 AM Hi all, managed to get a few outings this week. On Wednesday I found two spindle whorls (the first I've ever found) and the roman coin below. The other coin I think is a Charles 2 penny, I took the photo's with the coin wet to show the outlines as its badly corroded. On Thursday I got out again and found another spindle whorl, they are like buses at the moment but I'm not complaining. Thanks.

The roman coin is a good bit bigger than the Denarius (that is the only other roman i've found), the coin seems to have an outer layer. Thanks probono for your info on this, I had seen Marcus Aurelius but thought that the beard seems to be split and the god (tail side) didn't match any of the one on the site. Thanks again to both of you and anyone else who has viewed these finds.

I've attached two images - one of Aurelius and the other labelled as Commodus but M .Aurelius again...... (this bit is an edit!). I had thought maybe Septimius Severus (he has some split beard portraits as well), but I think it will be one of the first two. The image on the back of the coin might be the emperor sacrificing. There are many types, but your coin is worn and chipped.

Just had this coin back and this is the finding of the PAS (Liverpool museum - Vanessa Oakden), just to keep you updated. A copper alloy sestertius or as of Septimus Severus (AD 193-211). Reverse: figure standing with long staff, right arm outstretched and ? next to feet. Phil |
