All Metal- A setting available on some detectors allowing them to register any metal type whether iron or non ferrous.

Discrimination- The ability of a metal detector to ignore unwanted items such as ring pulls, iron nails, silver paper. In most cases set this no higher than "iron" level as there is a chance of rejecting wanted items.

F.L.O.- Finds Liaison Officer appointed official for county in charge of recording and identifying finds.

Ferrous- Objects made from iron.

Ground Balance- The point at which a detector will neutralise ground minerals and have a better ability to register wanted targets.

Motion- Detectors that can cancel ground effects but discriminate at the same time the coil has to be kept moving.

Notch- A setting that allows the detector to accept or reject items within a certain conductivity IE only accept £1 coins.

Threshold- The point of tuning on a detector where a faint tone can just be heard.

Grot- Worn or badly corroded bronze or copper coin, normally Roman or Georgian.

Hammered Coin- A coin that has been struck by hand between dies from a coin blank normally silver or gold some low value ones where struck in copper or copper alloy.

Ground Effect- Loss of depth caused by positive or negative mineralisation

Non Motion- Detector that registers a target when the search coil is held stationary over the top of it.

Air Test- A test to determine the maximum sensitivity a metal detector is capable of under ideal conditions.Various sized metal samples are held beyond the searchcoil bottom at varying distances to determine the limits of audio or visual response. Air tests are not accurate indicators of ground penetration ability.

Crosstalk- The interference between two detectors operating close to each other using the same transmit frequency.

SSSIs- Sites of Special Scientific Intrest are usually conservation areas that have been set up in order to protect wildlife and plantlife. There are laws protecting these sites and detecting is usually out of the question.

Concentric- Search head with circular coils of a different diameter tuned into each other.Such coils produce a cone shaped search matrix.

Double D- Type of search head containing two balanced D-shaped coils this is also known as widescan.

PI- Pulse induction. A type of detector able to ingnore mineralisation but usually used for searching on wet sand.

Kaister:
Proof : Carefully struck coin from special dies with a mirror like or matt surface. ( in this country `Proof` is not a term used to describe the state of preservation, but the method of striking )
