hiya all, i am new to all this detecting lark. i,ve got a c scope 3mx and was wondering about a pin pointers.
as far as i can see there are a couple of makes, the main one being garrett. there is another one called the bounty hunter, at about half the price.  ???  has anyone any suggestions on which one i should try.

     any info would be greatly received.

just using it on farmland around shropshire....

my first machine was a c-scope 2m....as a starter machine its fine

Hi Bulbus and welcome to the forum.
The Garrett is the one to go for if you can afford it and think yu will stay in the hobby. The 3mx is a greatly overlooked machine I have sites that I wish I had one to use on, not the deepest machine but fast, sensitive to hammies and fantastic around iron.

Geoff's advice is sound there Bulbus. if you are sure you're likely to stick with the hobby, and can afford one i'd go with the garrett as well (like most on here own one).
but don't be fooled into thinking you HAVE to buy one. i detected for over 8 years before i bought one.

The 3MX is a very underated machine. Great value. Don't change in a hurry.

Having used quite a few probes over the years, I've had the Garrett a couple of years and it's stood up
to a bashing and have had no problems. Pricey, but good.

All the other probes broke!

Go for a Garrett, don't buy a Sherlock

  as for staying with the hobby, hopefully i will.. fortunate enough to know plenty of farmers to wander round the fields.
 its a bit of a change of hobby.. used to go ghost hunting. ???   
 will defo get a pin pointer now i think...

sorry to keep asking a load of questions everyone... headphones... is it best to have wireless headphones as i seem to keep getting a bit tangled when digging.. and its giving the jack some stick.  its probably me though..do people take the headphones off when digging down quite deep...

I used to have the same problem till I bought some really good phones off Chef Geoff. His phones have longer leads and are the bees knees. I also solved the problem of pulling on phones and dropping detector by getting a belt bungee. Simply attach to belt loop and detector, get a signal and just let go. It stops the detector hitting the ground and keeps it suspended while you dig.
Click on Chef Geoffs name and it will take you to his 'profile' I'm pretty sure there is a link through to his site and you can look at his phones. Think you'll find a lot of other members will reccommend them.
As for sweep speeds, slow and low.

Hello Bulbus.I started with a 3mx.Good machine,found me some good stuff.I willl probably buy another one as a back up machine.You will have good finds with it.
Headphones.I completely agree with Val.Chef phones are superb.When I started,I had some sony phones which were good,however they weren't built for the job,so after alot of research I got some chef phones.Superb.The only problem was they sounded different to the sonys and I had to "learn" the machines tones again if you know what I mean.I think if I were you I'd get the phones first,then a probe and definately get the garret when you can afford it.I brought a sherlock before my garrett and it's not that useful to be honest.I dont have to use the probe that much,but its handy if the item is in the wall of the hole and you've missed it.What I do is keep removing soil until the detector picks it up in the spoil heap and then if you cant find it in there,grab a handful of soil at a time and pass it over your coil.Good luck and welcome to the best m/d forum there is!  ;)

If you use a Deus aren't you using the wireless 'phones?

Have you kept the Chef 'phones as a momento  ???

Personally, I think you'd be better of with a Deus large coil. Then you won't need a back-up machine!

£1400 and you have to take a stanley knife to it to change the battery, do us a favour ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I don't think I would be too happy paying well over a thousand pounds to have to change a battery with a stanley knife! Surely thats got to be a design fault.  I find it unbelievable that XP would put this on their site - it must put people off buying them.

I find it far easier to just slide a new battery pod in for 16 hours detecting.

Still to be convinced by the Deus

£1400? No, a lot cheaper than that, and also less than a Monsterlab.

The batteries shouldn't need changing for years, and Regton will do it for you if you wish.

At least there's batteries and a processor in there. Most coils just have some copper wire and silicon  ;D.
