Hi all,
Found these two items within about 15 yards of each other, I haven't clean the shield as there seems to be some colour on it. I know what the block with the hole through is, thought it might be interesting to see what people think. 
Size of block is :- 46 mill (hole to hole) x 46 mill across x 40 mill deep.
Shield :- 44 mill x 38 mill.

Looks like a knife pommel to me.

Well that didn't take long, I think because of it's size and weight its a sword pommel. Roughly late 1400 through to mid 1500, looking at very similar types on Finds.org.uk. Cheesy
