heres a question for you all .

if you find an item , lets say a fob with a known family crest or similar type item which can be proved to belong to the family , can a surviving family member ask for it back  Undecided Undecided

Or would it be up to the Coroner if it's over 300 years old and a lost item.  Will be interested in the outcome but might have to wait a long time.

On the other hand. If the family could be traced would it be the right thing to do in returning it to them and by passing the Coroner.

British Law is so diverse and complicated.

Didn't some descendants of the people who buried the Tregwynt hoard try to claim it back?

On the other hand, just because the fob is of a particular family crest, who is to say it  belonged to the family when it was lost. Someone could have bought it as scrap gold, it could have been used as a payment instead of money, swapped for another family seal as a keepsake. The possibilities go on.

I imagine that handing over an Item to the original family would do you and your hobby a great service and you can't even begin to imagine the spinoffs that may come from your sacrifice!  Wink

Very true Taff I think some documented evidence of ownership or loss would be needed or all the old retainer badges found would belong to the Royal Family Huh

A lad over here has found a silver seal from a 14th century Bishop of Isle of Man and we still have the BISHOP OF SODOR & MAN and I don't think he claiming on behalf of church..I think the only time people claim on family treasures which have disappeared within living memory and.usually can prove ownership.A family crest is no proof as single crests can belong to more than one family.
