At the last Detectingwales.com Rally in Ludlow I found my first silver thimble. I know I was as shocked as all my buddies as I never find silver ones, but have around 30 copper alloy ones!

Anyway after a bit of boiling water to soften it and a bit of tidying up - here it is!

The first one is as found and the next two after pictures. Dates to around 1850 as confirmed by the FLO's present.

Lovely job Neil, it came up lovely.

OK now for the down side, just a warning to all those who may fancy having a go at straightening anything silver, please don't use boiling water. While the annealing starts at about 80*c on solid silver it is not complete until it reaches 500*c and even higher on sterling silver. So please use a blow torch or even the flame from a gas hob as eventually you are going to hear the "PING" of snapping silver.

Here is an excellent demo video of how to straighten a silver coin.
