IM THINKING OF GETTING A SEF COIL ,,,, I KNOW THEY COVER MORE GROUND ,,,, BUT  DOES IT  MAKE A LOT OF  DIFFERENCE  IN THE  DEPTH  ??? ??? ??? ???    ALSO   WHAT  DOES   SEF   ACTUALLY STAND FOR  ??? ??? ???  THANKS

Which when you break it down doesn't say very much. I always think of them as being a rip off of the Nexus coil design but then I always thought the Nexus design was derived from the Crone brothers coil design of twenty years back.

Depth wise if you have a poor coil on your machine you will think the SEF is great. With the Explorer I would be happy to stay with the Pro coil though the SEF does seem a little deeper.

With any much larger (or smaller) coil to get the best out of it you need a ground balance control or could end up opening the control box to tweak inside to optimise it.

A cheaper detector like the Garrett 250 doesn't seem the best bet for a SEF, on an American forum its described as putting lipstick on a pig but a couple of people have tried it and been pleased with the results.

As for depth, different machines, different results. Old style coils lost sensitivity as the coil size was increased but new design's have got round this to a great extent. Its really a case where you need to try your machine with one or talk to someone you can trust. Then bear in mind the extra weight. I've rejected the larger SEF's as I know it would limit my detecting time. They are better in general than larger standard coil design's and seem to be well made with very few return's.

Trigger have you tried one on your MXT ?

I read a glowing report, then saw a post of someone that didn't like it on his MXT. I've a feeling it was Roger of "Rogers Relics" but can't really remember. I'll have to do a search on his site.

I,m thinking about putting a 10x12 sef on my whites if it turns out to be effective  I,ll put one on my explorer too don,nt want to go up in size due my preferance for small targets especially hammered silver on bad ground whats your opinion ( UK . BRIAN)  ;)

Well i use the 12 x 15" SEF on my explorer II the main advantage is that i run
sensitivity at maximum 99% of the time and despite being a large coil it excells at picking up small items both inland and on the beach.

On wet salt water beaches this combo is a killer and is far superior to the standard coil.

Inland sites it is better than the standard coil but not by too much again the extra sens. is a great boon and will find the smallest minim or minute hammie with no problem at all.

Again it overcomes mineralised sites despite its size with ease...i would say as i like
the explorer range that this is the best item i have ever bought and it suits me very well.

The minelab pro coil is also exceptional and i find little difference between them. IMHO.

i run in manual at all times and find that works for me...GL and HH PaulB. 8)

The minelab se and i assume the explorer 11  are far better set in manual mode, than detecting auto.

As for sef, many believe that there isnt that much difference between the pro coil and sef except shelling out extra pounds for what could be an extra inch,

whether its worth it, is down to what you can afford !

As stated above the minelab pro coil and the SEF range performance wise
have very little difference....i would reccomend either of them both are vast improvements
on the standard coil that was issued with the explorer II model. 8)

I found Rogers post which says he didn't find sufficient benefits to warrant spending the cost of the SEF for his MXT. He also says the same about third party coils in general.

I have some third party coils I would not be without, but each to his own.

HI DIGGA. I GOT RID OF MY 12 X15 SEF DUE TO THE WEIGHT. ALTHOUGH THEY ARE A GOOD COIL. I WOULDN'T PUT YOU OFF BUT BEAR IN MIND THE WEIGHT. REGARDS AND GOOD HUNTING.
