I wouldn't be surprised if that ring is a bit special John.   It's certainly very nice.

The ring has some resemblance to a Bishops Ring

Great minds think alike Dylan.  The markings do resemble the Celtic Cross.

Thats a thing of beauty.

Is the bezel raised proud? As it looks to be a silver medieval seal ring to my untrained eye.

That notch above it almost looks deliberate, like you seen in modern rings where a woman wears her engagement and wedding ring over lapping each other.

Quality find and I am sure there a ton of more research to be done here.

Well done and get back there asap!
Neil

That's an incredible find John well done you, intriguingly or worryingly the symbol has a great similarity to that for black sulphur also known as the "Satanic Cross" ???

I think Chef may be on the money there - certainly looks like a stylised version on the one on wikipedia. Link below:

Well spotted Cheffy!

The mystery deepens.  Fascinating.  Here's the Wiki link

Love to know more about it.    (Smacks of the inquisition) :o

Hi John. Fantastic find. However, I bet your partner is disappointed though with it being the wrong colour (ref. our discussion at the Shepton rally). Back in 2005 I found one similar in shape and the outer circle on the bezel was the same. Although I would have called it a seal ring the Treasure report described it as a large medieval signet ring. They gave a date of 15th or early 16th century.

Thanks everyone.  The bezel is raised proud Neil, yes.  I have e-mailed pics to the museum who would like to take a look at it.  And yes Ian, the missus is still trying to get me on the beaches after a band of gold  ;D  Hoping to get back to this field at the weekend.

John
