Well found, and not often seen - an example of Phase A (1195- c.1205) of the William I (the Lion) of Scotland Short Cross and Stars coinage.

Phase A has the obverse legend WILELMVS REX instead of LE REI WILAM which appears on the later coins. The 'S' can be clearly seen, so must be the early issue.

The letters of the moneyer that can be seen are 'VL', so it is Raul of the Roxburgh mint. The full legend would have been RAVL ON ROCE.

Woohoooo!

This is really exciting. It's my first Scottish coin and my oldest coin yet!  Grin

It's very strange I've only had a couple of finds I can identify from this field, this one and the other was an Irish George I half penny. The field is slap bang in the middle of Devon!

Thanks you all so much for your help identifying it. I've just spent the last hour examining Scottish medieval coins online. I have been desperately trying to find one with an 's' on it and was just questioning what the 's' might be then I got the Doc's reply. I'm chuffed!

Dale - yours is William the Lion, Short Cross and Stars Phase B, moneyers Hue of Edinburgh and Walter of Perth working together.
