Title: Bit of an odd stone, Any Ideas ?
Post by: Zeus (Joel) on January 11, 2013, 06:37:26 PM
Found this today. Looks like a tooth and had what i thought was a wire loop in the top but apparently it's not wire as probe can't find it. Could it be string that has adhered to the stone ?

Hi Joel

I have little stones, big stones, bits of rock, chipping fossils, you name it and i've picked it up. But just when you want one you know you've got, can you find it ? NO.
I had one similar, I know I did, for ages. It's sandstone with something in it, just like yours. I think yours looks like a fish bone. They do seem to break off in odd shapes and then get rolled around and smoothed off.
Facinating aren't they.

The second pick makes it look as if it has inclusions (a small circular ?shell?) so are you sure it's not hardened clay or abraded pottery?

I'm very pleased to hear your Daughter has a stone collection. I had a stone and pottery collection when I was little. Sows the seeds for the future.

Just been looking at fish vertibrae. Do a Google and have a look at some of the  diagrams.
