I'm 99% sure this is Iron Age, it came from my crop mark field. Initially I was thinking a handle of sorts from a jug or tankard, then terrett  Undecided ring but doesn't fit that item very well, a sword pommel was my last thought all though no sign of the iron attachment, possibly horse furniture........Over to you guys  Wink Wink

Hi ya Paul, this looks to be a truly intriguing find, and at a totally wild guess it seems that the top looks a bit "Moorish" what with the appearance of a POSSIBLE Crescent moon, one ofwhich is sadly missing, which brings me onto the possibility that it could be the finial off a  warrior's helm.
Also if it were,it would be  easily detached from the helm with the aid of a hefty blow of a broadsword.....wow!! Paul ......sorry only a romantic thought !!.....great artifact though, wish I'd found it....very,very,nice.......👍

Iron Age terret ting in my book missing it second hoop.

The link below shows on page three a similar one stylistically although granted not the same. I'll keeping looking for a closer comparison.

As always a quality find. Well done and keep them coming.

Thanks for your suggestion Chris, what looks now like a crescent moon would have been a circle the other one of which is now broken off. It's a bit heavy construction I feel for it to be attached  to a helmet.... Wink Wink

Thank you Neil for your comment and the link, it would appear to be along the lines of horse furniture fitting, so terrett may well be correct. I've sent picture to FLO keep you updated....

Very interesting find - wonder if it was lost in battle or just discarded because it had broken (in battle).

Another nice find Paul.

If you can find your way around the PAS data base have a look at CAM-6323D4. It's a terret very similar construction to yours.
