You've probably got the sensitivity set too high.  I've got a Safari, so don't know anything about the GT but I know if I have mine set too high it drives me mad.
The nulling could be large iron.  Some one is sure to know something about it.

Sorry that doesn't mean much to me, mine goes up in numbers.   As an example,  I would usually have it set at 16 - 18 for field work and down it to 14 for my local beaches which are trashy. Lower setting picks up less of the deeper trash but of course might miss goodies.

I have noticed the storms have churned up a load of rubbish. Last week I got fed up with the constant blurr of signals, like listening to Morse code, so I went down to 12 hoping to just pick up stuff higher in the sand. All that deeper stuff was a pain.

Hope you get it sorted for the tides next week end, looks like they're going to be really low.

set mine at 11 oclock and its fine , if it gets chatty turn to 12-1 or run it in auto but you will loose a little depth in auto .

discrim just turned on , notch the same , iron mask on  , track on , band 1 , threshold tone barely audible  , that's my std settings inland or beach , hope that helps , it works for me anyway  Smiley

Make sure you clean the sand between the coil and cover, I've sealed mine, I run my sensitivity from 10 to 3 o'clock.

I think Mike means the coil plug, Where are you based? The best idea would be to hook up with another Sov user and test your coil at least then you can narrow down where the fault lies. Does it have the standard coil fitted or a third party?
