Well done Alan

I agree with the toy rifle stock - well spotted.

The button I think is a Civil Defence one - WWII era

Nice finds

Neil

Nice finds Alan, It does look part of a toy gun and the crown on the button looks to early for civil defence, more 19thC. Try looking for the 104th Regiment of Foot,

wow guys -- thnaks for the help, now you mention it, it certainly looks like the stock of a toy gun, i'm amazed that they produced such superb designs on them though.

thx geoff, for the info re the crown, an initial search suggested  it could be something to do with the City Imperial volunteers, for the Boer war.

i was wondering if you have any further leads/websites/links that could point me in the direction of where to go to find out more about this button.

cheers & thx all for helping out with the ID.

Well Alan we may have to eat our words, I have just found this on the Colchester treasure hunting page and it's marked as a "Bowl leg"

Hi geoff

thats very interesting indeed. i have been researching lace chapes, but i'm now fairly certain that the object doesn't fit into that category.

the concept of toy gun barrel is a good one, but it seems the missing bit makes the stock handle upside down, when fitted.

a bowl leg, is a strong possibility, as many pots came straight out of the 'fire' onto the table. they needed something to rest on ... this decorated bowl leg could be one of 3, designed to support such a bowl.

the jury is still out, but its  a very interesting find.

thanls for bringing the link to my attention Geoff.

look forward to seeing you at the next rally,

cheers

Alan

No Alan, forget oven wear. think wire frame that a glass bowl sits in. More like an ornate fruit bowl stand.
The gun idea is good one still, but you've got the wrong idea again it's not the barrel, it's the stock.

my money is still on it being the stock of a toy rifle, you can see a groove on the right hand side for the bolt action  ;)

Hi Alan,

I think I've found it c1890-1910...

The date of 1890-1910 is based on them being sold by Gamage of London, to be sure you would have to get hold of an old catalogue of theirs (yes they still exist around the place).
Saxonman.... these fired matchsticks, it is the small toy cannons that actually used gun powder.

arrrr  we had some that fired matchsticks when i was young, had a lot of fun with it,
found a plastic gun down the beach the the other day,  noticed later that it should shoot  something out,  i went back tuesday and found the missing very soft plastic dart that has a soft sucker on the end,
the grandkids are happy with it lol.

A button with crown and what looks like C I V  underneath.

all help appreciated.

Could be the  City Imperial volunteers? I believe they wore a C.I.V. shoulder title as a cap badge in the slouch hat.

A makers name or any markings on the back might help me more?

Personally I lean towards the 104th Foot but nothing definite yet.

Here are a couple of pics of Bona Fide 100% City Imperial Volunteers buttons. No prizes for guessing their date...

Also your find.
