Ok, this is as far as I've got with this one:

Constantius II AE3.

Obverse: FL IVL CONSTANTVS NOB C

Reverse: PROVIDENTIAE CAESS.

Now this is where I'm stuck, to me the mint mark looks like MNA, but there isn't a listing for that, so am thinking could there possibly be an S in front making it SMNA which would be Nicomedia, however another but now, looking on Wildwinds the bust for this coin and mint is facing the wrong way........... help please  Smiley

Diameter 18mm.

Cheers
Herbie

Nice find Herbie Wink It's just MNA which is as you say Nicomedia, no S missing. All Constantius II Campgate types on Wildwinds are facing left so not quite sure why your confusion?

Just because it isn't on wildwinds doesn't make it unrecorded Smiley

Wildwinds has just what people have recorded there (and the administrators can be bothered to load up) - I've sent quite a few coins (image wise) to them that are not listed but have not appeared.

Thanks guys, I've had some coins that have been 'soaking' for ages, this is the first one I've looked at, glad to be able to get an ID on it, it was encrusted when it went in.

I'm a rookie when it comes to getting ID's on coins, it takes me ages and as I've no reference books I rely on internet searches which always seem to lead to Wildwinds.

Interesting read about Nicodemia Alan.

The internet has made a great difference to identifyng coins - and wildwinds is a great site for that; but it should be realised that there are many coins still not listed there (they would have to re-arrange their website to include everythng) - and there is a curious mix of really rare stuff and common stuff (with a lot of common stuff missing).

But, over the years, I've been slowly adding to my collection of references - it's amazing how much stuff out there still doesn't have online references.

Websites like CNGcoin.com have useful research sections and often allow you to narrow down coins (but don't think you would achieve the prices they manage!)

Thanks Probono I'll make a note of that website, there's also a bit of info on the PAS website as well which has come in handy. I'm getting more confident with the really straightforward stuff Wink I do enjoy the research though.

I do enjoy the research though.
Personally I enjoy the research as much as the actual detecting, Be it site research or find research  Smiley
