Title: GPS and Finds Recording
Post by: BottyBurp (Kris) on November 01, 2008, 05:14:17 PM
What do you use to record your finds?

Over the last few years I have used a handheld GPS (just upgraded to the Garmin GPS60) & I use this alonside some software called "Memory Map".

This is a 3D mapping system which you can view in either Ordnance Surver format, Satellite Image format or 3 Dimensional format.

When I'm out detecting & I make a reasonably good find I just have to press the one button on my GPS & it will record a 10 figure grid reference (dead handy) it will also draw all my fields for me or I can just view them on the map.

When I get home I download all the grid references to Memory Map & I can instantly view all the find spots & build a picture of hot spots!

I always use magic interactive maps. www.magic.gov.uk (http://www.magic.gov.uk) . It not only gives you a full grid reference, but if you go into "Design my own topic", you can also find out if there are any shceduled monuments, registered battlefields etc. in your chosen area.

This is useful information if you are reporting anything over 300 years old like all our Society members do.
They too have bought themselves a hand help GPS for that reason.
Well done
