Title: Lets see your Roman coins found in Wales . . .
Post by: Neil on January 16, 2011, 04:48:35 PM
Its a cold, wet night, so lets have a look at some of the Roman coins that DW members have found in Wales. Most of the ones I find tend to be in a bit of a state (well you would be too after 2000 years!), but there are the odd exception.

All the ones below were found in Southish Wales from The VOG to Brecon to Gwent.

So come on guys lets see your Welsh found Romans - I know some of you have some crackers in your collections. Even if its just to prove that they are to be found in Wales.

Cheers
Neil

It would be interesting to know how many are turning up, because from what people are posting there is a very high proportion of silver.

In the Caerleon Roman Museum theres a representation of a typical Roman Soldiers months wages.
and it looks like a demijon worth of coins, i dont think they where bothered about loosing the odd Bronze coin.
Guess thats why theres so many around

Thought I would start this post back up as Neil started it in January 2011 it would be nice to see what other roman coins have turned up since then in Wales.
Here is my only roman since that post
Septimius Severus (9th April AD 193 - 4th February AD 211) found two weeks ago. ;)

It would be nice to restore the 'old' images too :)

I've attached some pictures of some romans found in the vale. The two silvers are the only ones i have found. All three coins were foundin the last year, the Gallienus in the last couple of months.

I've probably found 60 romans in the last year, the earliest being the Sept Severus, the latest being Gratian. Whilst I had a good January coins-wise, I've had nothing this month so far :( - but you do have to go out to find stuff.......
