Attached is a map of known Roman forts in Wales. Its interesting their spread and where they are in close proximity of each other I would have thought indicated areas of unrest or important trade routes.

Can anyone think of any that we suspect are missing?

I am sure theres a few out there that are still to be recorded.

Cheers
Neil

Nice one Paul - I had a feeling there were a few missing.

I would imagine that there are a few missing as on the Rhine their forts are a days march from each other, this system was copied by Alfred the Great when he laid out his Burhs. It meant that reinforcements could be sent in 24 hours.

Depends on whether or not you are talking about forts or marching camps Smiley

There's one at Miskin called Caergwynaf that's not on the map

Additionally there is a possible roman fort / enclosure at Whitchurch, Cardiff, and there is of course the possible fort underneath Cowbridge.

There are also two forts just above Tonna in Neath, and one down towards Tonmawr. # The ones above Tonna are known but the farmer will not allow anyone on his land (as yet anyways). Got one more in Banwen but thats been built over.
All in the Neath area.

Agree there Badgers, hopefully the farm I am on now should be close to one when i can get up higher on the incline. I will just hope that i can post some pics to be identified lol Grin
Been using a reference site along with UK grid reference finder to gather info on not only Roman but a load of other reference points in my area. Might be of use to someone.

Been Tempted to stray over the bridge to known sites where i may uncover good finds, but determined to find a productive site in my area. Plenty of past history here from Roman, Saxon through to relics from all ages. Enjoying the research just need that little bit of luck . Roll Eyes
Good fun anyways

There is supposedly a missing fort ,somewhere along the a48 , between Cardiff and Neath,a chap wrote a book about it, back in the 1980s,called "In search of bomium".He tended to think that it was probably located near the Ewenny area, just out side Bridgend,What complicated matters was that "bomium" could be a corruption of the word "bovium, meaning "cow", this led him to also consider Cowbridge as the site, though that would place it a bit to near to Cardiff. The Romans liked their forts evenly spaced out

I've just been re-reading about that in some books I've bought on the vale (published by GGAT) - I'm still inclined to Cowbridge as the place - although of course they don't know what Cardiff Fort was called either.

If you are interested this book as a list of >300 forts in the UK:-

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Roman-Forts-Britain-Paul-Bidwell/dp/0752441078

many of the higher numbered ones (i.e the ones most recently found) are in Wales - Caergwanaf for instance is I think no. 304, Llandeilo 303 - there are definitely more than are on Neil's map.
