Any idea what coin this is. I can see imp constantinus aug on the obverse. Not sure if it is silvered. Came out looking black and the lettering shows up better with rubbing with silver paper.

the inscription matches that found on Constantine 1 coinage from 307 to 318ad.

you will find this on p33 in the book 'roman coins' richard reece and simon james.

the mint mark look like PTR - which means the primary mint  trier,

the revers image looks like Sol, with whip and globe and the hint of the inscription  SOLINVIC TOCOMITI.

nice find, well done indeed

Well done Eric, it's a nice coin. And well done with your ID Alan. Here's a link to an example of the same coin:

it may be a good coin cleaning lesson, but be warned,  all it does is devalue the worth of the coin, should it ever come to open market.

it all depends on what one wants from the coin itself.!

cheers

It wasn't so much a coin cleaning lesson as "don't clean it here, wait till you get home and do it carefully", lesson I seem to remember. Trying to clean it in the field with a gritty glove on was going to do a lot of damage to the coin surface.

I have spent a lot of time cleaning roman grots to learn how to do it without damaging them. Olive oil is a good start but even that need care and constant checking. The worst result I have seen is from trying to scrub the surface with a tooth brush using Hydrogen Peroxide, this is definitely a no no.

Glad to see I did some good on the day.
