Title: Coin from Chepstow Rally Post by: Meatslicer on August 07, 2010, 10:58:56 PM Any idea what coin this is. I can see imp constantinus aug on the obverse. Not sure if it is silvered. Came out looking black and the lettering shows up better with rubbing with silver paper.

Trying to clean it in the field with a gritty glove on was going to do a lot of damage to the coin surface.
I have spent a lot of time cleaning roman grots to learn how to do it without damaging them. Olive oil is a good start but even that need care and constant checking. The worst result I have seen is from trying to scrub the surface with a tooth brush using Hydrogen Peroxide, this is definitely a no no. Glad to see I did some good on the day. Yes Stred, my ankle is swollen a bit but I can walk on it. I have done it in several times in the past and the tendon on the outside isn't attached anymore so it dislocates really easily, but clicks back in again too. Just hurts like hell while its doing it. 22 stone of pure muscle falling on it tends to do that! :D Thanks for your concern. Finding a coin sort of took my mind off it for a few seconds. Have to have a word with Tafflaff about going back there. Remember there is a crop mark in that field where the grass was pretty long next to the one with the cows in.
