Title: stone age bead
Post by: b.buoy on February 26, 2015, 09:26:37 PM
This bead was found many years ago by a local farmer in a ploughed field. It was picked up only because it was a round stone with a hole in the middle and he kept it in his jacket pocket for ages.
When he eventually looked at it properly it had polished against the jacket material and he could see the patterns set into it.
It was reported to the university of Bangor who said it is approx. 2400 years old.
He will allow me to try and photograph it properly so watch this space.
C,mon all you clever folks. How did such a bead get manufactured in the iron age. It appears to be stone and is cold to the touch.

I saw that bead years ago, it's a nice thing.  I'm surprised John has kept it , I thought it had gone to a museum .

It may look like stone but I would of thought it's probably glass, there are a few with a similar swirl design on the PAS site...

I just been looking up and as you say, it is almost certainly glass. What a skill, especially that long ago. It is probably iron age as well. I don't know where I got stone age from.

He says that if ever a local museum is set up it will go there. I understand exactly what he is about on that one, I wanted my stuff to stay local as well. Chester was the nearest museum and they did a huge amount of work cataloguing my stuff.
trouble was that Chester is obviously in England and my stuff was Welsh finds.
The only one time I was in Cardiff and went to see everything they charged me £1 to go in. lol :)

Nice find ta for showing ;)

I watched a Time Team (Green Island Poole Harbour) and they showed how the Ironage people made bracelets, very similar to the bead but on a larger scale obviously to fit the wrist, it involved a lot of spinning ;D...... its worth a watch.
