Title: Out with Swansea Metal Detecting Club today
Post by: Debbie on June 26, 2011, 07:39:34 PM
Out in the Badlands again today ( yes, there is silver even when the motorway ends   ;D  ;D)

A great turn out by Swansea Club members to a new farm.  Easy parking in a concrete yard and just a few yards walk to the first field.  Everyone was keen to start - blue sky, sunshine and the peace and quiet of the beautiful Welsh countryside.

We all set off, and within minutes of switching her detector on, Max's first signal yielded a Charles Ist sixpence  :o  What a great start to the day  ;D

A short while later, there was a huddle at the other side of the field and John had found a large lead commemorative medal - about the size of a half crown.  Everyone seemed to be digging targets here and there, and my first good find was a Victorian shilling dated 1869.

As the morning wore on, the sun rose higher and the day got hotter  :D  I had another signal - same sound and number on the VDI and just a few inches down was a lovely George IV shilling dated 1829.  I worked my way around the field and, deciding to walk back to the car for a top-up on cold drinks and a quick bite to eat, I found what looks like a broken Roman brooch.

After lunch I found the usual buttons and grotty  halfpennies, but Peter was rewarded later in the afternoon with a cracking Denarius.

The artefact of the day was found by Faye - she had a silver lid off a cigarette case - the hallmarks were very clear.  It is a super find - well done Faye.

One of the last silver coins to be winkled was a silver half crown - not sure which reign and don't know who found it - but it was by the gate where we all trampled in and out of the field  :D  Well done, that man !

I thoroughly enjoyed the day - good weather, good finds, and good company  ;)

Deb

Faye found this at the club rally today, we searched for the other half of it... picture has scanned a bit blurry, but its hallmarked maker GH Inshaw, Birmingham ....sterling silver .925, letter V at the end, so I think its 1920????Top half of a cigarette case.

There were some really nice finds today. And surprising too. It's not every day that Roman turns up this far West. Well done Peter and everyone else who found goodies.
I shall refrain from posting a pici of my 1/2 a Cow bell but the Horse shoes were quite impressive. ::)

No I only sat Jan - not enough space between the cow poo to lie down for me.  I did notice someone flat out in one of the fields and first thought was that someone had fainted in the heat but the body moved after a while so all ok  :)

Getting there - hasn't gone perfectly - the surface seems very fragile and is flaking away a bit. Here's the head side, the reverse is still looking a bit of a mess and will have another go at that tomorrow.

What a great coin Peter. Didn't think it would be that good when I saw it. Well worth a return visit in the Autumn.

Hi Jas
I came across this old thread of yours, and you mention a GH Inshaw of birmingham.
My ggg uncle Alfred Rodway's father in law was councillor John Joseph Inshaw, and I think that Gh was one of johns sons.
John  was a noted Victorian inventor, and I have a lot of info on him.  the date of 1920 would fit as well
I have a pic of john dated 1882 in the driving seat of a steam fire engine that he designed and built, and with him are his sons (one was named john george - aged 6 in the 61 census, but it is possible that he took the name george to stop any mix up with his father).

Hi jas
been doing the genealogy bit for about 15 yrs, must admit i hav'nt done much for a couple of years now.  managed to get enough history to write up 2 volumes, its amazing what you can find out, and new family to meet. managed to get back to the mid 1600's, but then the commonwealth period means that a lot of info is lost forever.  like the metal detecting, history seems to take a big part in whatever i seem to do ;D

the thing is..its so time consuming, but fascinating all the same. the info does start drying out the further back you go which is a shame . :(

if anything jas, I know more about my distant ancestors than the more recent ones. strange isnt it. guess that records are more available over 100 yrs ago
