3 lb lump of lead. Approx 5 inches long tapering to countersunk hole, flat base. found using euroace 350 with 0 disc, approx 6 inches deep on area of pasture
That has been ploughed many years ago.thought it might be a window sash weight, but they are usually iron and don't have a flat base.
Any ideas ? Thanks in advance.

Looks like a Loom weight.. Try a Google search for them. They come in all sorts of shapes and sizes depending on the textile being woven.
Nice find  Smiley

Hi Val
Thanks for your reply, you've given me a possible route for a bit more research.
I found this item near the remains of a very old farm house near Bridgend.Do you know if there was much weaving going on in South Wales ?

Before the Spinning Jenny was invented every self respecting house wife (rural) spun her own thread and knew how to weave.
Look up the Spinning Jenny for dates.

Could be a sounding weight, lots found on beaches. Found on pasture so maybe not.

Hi Greg,see where your coming from,BUT !! I don't think it's a sounding weight,maybe a bit too small !!
My guess,Hemm !! Could be a plain (but old) plum weight, they have been used for generations to ensure the trueness of walls on buildings, castles, churches etc
Nice find mate, well searched  and saved .👍

Having restored very many box sash windows on national trust properties, my proffesional opinion would be that it is a sash weight from a small window or one that has cut down for something else. But that's just my opinion Cheesy
