Title: what`s the background on this?
Post by: Stig(The) on June 22, 2009, 07:04:29 PM
Pete, can you share your knowledge & tell me what you know about this:
Pic is of a Bristol token, dated Augt 12.1811,for X11 Pence with what looks like a Sailing ship Leaving a castle in the centre & the words;virtute et industria.
On the reverse it says;to facilitate trade & a list of names,the first 4 are too worn to read,the final 3 are;Edw`d Bird,Lan`t Beck & Fran`s H Grigg.
Thanks  ???

The Ship and Castle are part of the modern City of Bristol insignia and the same is used as the club crest by Bristol City football club and dates back to the medieval period.  Not sure what the rest means.

It's a nice find stig. Not sure if I can add much, apart from this, which explains why silver tokens were produced in 1811-12:
