Hi folks, had an hour on the farm yesterday and come up with a coin that I just haven't a clue on what it is. The picture is below. It has 1812 on one side, also XI by looks of it in large lettering and also the name JOAN on the edge, it is slight bigger than a penny and slightly thicker and I think it is copper, can anyone ID it for me please? The pewter thing I think is a cane top or maybe the top of a riders crop as there is wood inside, an I correct on that? Thanks in advance guys and gals.

The coin is prob. a token Tess. Can't see enough detail to do a search but wondered if I could see a ship in the 2nd pici.  You're probably right about the riding crop end.

Hi Val, thanks for the info, I don't think it is a ship but more likely a shield or something like a coat of arms maybe.

...not posted here before, but known on a few other forums, so hello to you all. I have taken a stab at your coin below:

...it is a 40 Reis coin from the Portuguese Brazil Colony 1812. The coin was minted under the name of John VI of Portugal (13 May 1767 – 10 March 1826). Obverse shows the denomination X.L. with the royal Crown above and the date below. The reverse shows a globe with a band going around it.

A globe was a popular emblem on Brazilian coins during the 1700s and early 1800s, and the Reis denomination had the coins value in large Roman numerals appearing on many of these type of coins.

Great ID my friend - No wonder I didn't have a clue. This is certainly the coin without a doubt. I am now wondering how it ended up in a field in North Wales Smiley

Good ID. In Portugal the commun name for these coins are ``patacos´´ I till date have only found one.  The best book to eveluate this voin is the ( Alberto Gomes  moedas de Portugal ) very very good book. I dont have it with me at the moment but I will have a peak when I am back in office...

P.S by the way great coin, due to size and weight they usually are damaged and very worn yours is in greta condition...~
heres my portuguese one, they usually pop up in this condition or worse..

Pok3rman did an excellent job in IDing the coin, well done

Here goes:
There are 3 different types of this coin
1 st with a slightly lowered crown , 35mm 12,5 / 14,4 grs Lisbon mint

2nd type a slightly higher crown, 35mm 11,2 / 12,5 grs R ( Rio de janeiro mint / Brazil ) there are 2 types of this coin / with flowers either side of the date and without flowers either side of the date. Yours apparently has the flowers either side of the date.

3rd type
38 mm 9,8 / 18,2 grs B ( Bahia / Brazil ) There are also 2 types of this date with a slight difference on the crown

Yours I cannot distinguish the mint mark  R or B in the centre of the globe on the reverse.

The 3rd one is the most valuable between the varieties..

Type 1 ( LISBON / PORTUGAL )

Type 2 ( RIO DE JANEIRO )

Type 3 ( BAHIA )
