I had a day off today, so after a few house jobs, I met Mark at Midday and headed to the Newport area to a previously productive farm for a few hours detecting. Now in the past this farm has turned up hammered shillings, sixpences and numerous milled silver. Alas it was not to be today, and it was marked down as "Black Friday" as it is one of the very few occasions in our 6 years+ detecting together that we returned home from anywhere without a single piece of silver between us.

Onto the finds - after a smattering of copper coins ranging from George III onwards - the soil is really kind to them here, I managed to pull out a key escutcheon that looks handmade and probably dates to the 1700's. Mark found a similar date broken buckle nearby.

Next was a Royal Artillary cap badge that I was rather stoked with as for some reason I don't find many of these. I have a sizeable collection of cap badges from my youth and if memory serves me - if the wheel turns its pre WWI, if its static with a short barrel and ramrod its WWI and if its a longer barrel with no ramrod its WWII. I am hedging my bets at WWI, but I am sure someone on here can resolve this?

I also picked up a Cardiff  beer bottle from Hancocks - I used to drink HB as a kid, so I was particularly pleased with this, although I got a tad wet rescuing it from a semi-dried up stream.

Apart from a few more coppers and Mark finding a copper alloy Victorian brooch that was about it for our three hour stint.

I was happy though and it was good to catch up with a long standing mate.

Black Friday will hopefully be history now and we'll be onto better finds

I have found the exact same Royal Artillary cap badge as yourself while detecting in Reading , so info on it would be grand  Smiley
