Soo much Iron and so little time!!

« on: March 24, 2011, 11:09:36 PM »

After searching my back garden to try out my new secondhand detector and never having done this before finding £1.21 in modern coinage and a potfull of nails, scrap, wallties etc.a nice sunny day with damp ground and a couple of hours spare presented itself. This was Monday 21st March and after hearing the boss complain about spending all that money on a detector and not going out I thought Right lat's give it a proper go.But where? I know of a Mansion sitting in 4 acres of land which was built about 1900 and used to be a small holding with servants. There must be something there right? Permission not a problem as we are related and they want to know what's in the ground too.
Arriving with only a couple of hours spare I set the c-scope R1 in all metal mode and off to go.Starting at the steps which lead onto the lawn there were plenty of low tones which I ignored as iron. Also a couple of better signals but in line with a manhole thinking it was a metal pipe.Over toward the drive a good signal but in line with a plastic water pipe which I know has brass fittings.A few more beeps and I'm thinking why am I afraid to dig? Am I doubting the detector is finding anything worthwhile?
A few steps from under a tree gave me a good clear tone and I decided just do it.Carefully hinging the turf back, removing some soil and sweeping the hole told me the target was still in the ground. At 4" down I'm thinking where is it? Another spadeful brought the glistening green disc into view. After cleaning later found out it was a George V halfpenny 1932.My first pre-decimal coin Yippee! With a bit of confidence I continued.A 4" mixed metal nail, silver foil then a good signal.I pinpointed 4-5" out but eventually found a piece of gold paper(cigarette pkt?) which had given a strong signal.Carrying on a signal which was narrowish but quite long.Removing the turf brought the brass poker ship handle into view; The detector does work.Next a mixed strong signal brought the large iron nail into sight. Not sure if its a cut one or from an old door? A little closer toward the gate a highish pitched tone got me digging through fire ash.The detector said it was still there in the ground after 6" down.Into soil again and suddenly I was looking at the brass doorlock cover.Further on another signal and the molten lead was found.
Digging near the border the mixed signal turned out to be iron laden slag from the old fire ashes.Time for one more search! Working back across the lawn another high signal pinpointed quite small. After carefully lifting the turf and scanning again it was in the turf piece.A little routing found the pendant thingy I asked the Doc about showing through.Addictive this metal detecting!! No time for the rest of the week but what to do? A friday skive is certainly on the cards I think..Can't wait..

Thank you all for the encouragement and kind messages. They are much appreciated.A pipe tamper eh? Will certainly look into it anyway to tell for definite? There is a depression in the base but no roughness or signs of thread. Some other metal in there though. Was a hanging ring normal on pipe tampers then?
