Title: Brass Roman ???
Post by: Myke on February 08, 2017, 06:34:57 PM
Found an unidentifiable Roman (possibly a follis) today, it seems to be made of brass and as thin as a medieval hammered, seems the Romans were very busy reducing the silver content of their late coins...just like our present moneyers.

To be honest Mike it really doesnt sound like roman being that thin especially folly size. I suspect its more like a jetton of sorts? Show a picture may be... ;)

Guess it could be a Jetton....will try to post a picture later on, off set strike, hand milled edge, couple of Roman looking letters....found deep on site of Roman villa, but I do have a tendency to claim everything is Roman lol.

26 mm diameter...it came from almost exact spot and depth of 8 inches (unploughed pasture) where I found the Tacitus antonianus with a minelab explorer a few years ago....but having looked at jetton pictures you could be right...shame its so worn out.

Looks Roman to me, have a look at orichalcum on wiki for info on ancient brass.

26mm and brass, don't think so. Possibly a halfpenny  but wrong metal.

looks Roman to me Myke, I would be more than happy to say it isn't a Jetton even without seeing it in the flesh as it were.

Having now looked at your photo, and it not being as thin as a hammered Mike which is why I thought it not a Roman and given you had another Roman close by on a known villa site I would say it's Roman. Although it's very difficult not being in the hand.... ;)

You have shown two views of the same side. What's on the other?

I'm almost certain it isn't roman.

The row of dots on the edge of the coin (the beading) is wrong for roman coins - and it doesn't always mean that just because a roman was found near it that it must be roman - when I was on a dig in Israel (Tel Jezreel in 1993) we found a crusader coin at the same level as a fairly modern pistol.....
