Well done Rob. As you said, Henry III, moneyer Ricard, Class 5. Mint is London, Canterbury or Durham.

Ahhhh - my brain, my brain! How does Peter do it!?!?!

I know how to read a coin, but the monarch, the moneyer, the mint, oh and the class, is way beyond me! All from a cut half! Roll Eyes Shocked

I bet you could even tell us the last person to hold it and what he had for lunch!

All joking aside - I don't think there is anyone else on any website in the UK who has a patch on your hammered ID'ing skills Peter. We are lucky to have you here mate.

Cheers

There are none better, though a few equal, each website seems to have one person who has the "gift". I think it must be like having a knack for languages you've either got it or you haven't. Oh and by the way I haven't Cry

Well yes it was as a matter of fact , - not bad for a lumbering dinosaur of a machine close to extinction.

As I've always said, let your finds do the talking.

Thanks for the feedback. I still think of myself as a learner myself, and still not fit to clean the boots of masters of coin identification like Rod Blunt or Nigel Nicholson on UKDFD.

I think it's all about learning patterns, looking at a lot of coins either online or in the flesh and having a few good reference books. There are also some great reference sites online.

This UKDFD section by Rod Blunt is excellent for anyone wanting to learn about the long cross coinage:

Great link Peter, thanks.

If you're a learner then we'll all have to go and stand in the corner wearing pointy hats until the bell rings!!!

I'll keep you filed under "Guru" if that's ok  Grin
