Like to clean a couple up occasionally , can't see through the grime how much wear there is on them due to circulation.
Use Best Universal to start, then water and toothbrush, another dip, then water , toothbrush and finish with ink eraser. Takes about 15 minutes all told!  Grin

Good results there Steve,might give that a try,as you say its nice to clean a few up as long as there not valuable,what do you think the marks on the obverse of the cartwheel are ?.

Dunno Simon, didn't really take much notice until I cleaned it , diamond shaped punch marks that's for sure, keep looking at it , do you think it might be someone's intials I R ?

Yes Steve,thats exactley what i was thinking,I R initials, could have been re-used as a token ? Although i can see that some may think the results are a bit much,it certainly is'nt as harsh as electrolyses or acid,i have used crystalised citric acid " Monohydrate" on valuless copper coins,and as long as you monitor the process it does improve the visual apearence of the coin,but as with most things it's more trial and error and knowing when to stop.

Trouble with the coppers i have is , when you take the rubbish off even with electrolosis theres just not enough raised area to see anything?

hmm They have come out good fair doos,   sometimes on the old coppers it shows loads of pitting and not much detail when cleand up
