Popped up Monmouthshire way yesterday with a mate to a field that had been searched before & produced a few coins, buttons & tit-bits so we was hopeful of a couple more bits & bobs.
After parking up & the compulsary cup of Nescafe (other brands are available) off we went.
My mate was using the new "Gold Bug" & after only 2/3 minutes he called me over to check a signal with my F75 to see what it registered, it was a steady 31 on the VDU & the 1st diggable signal for both of us.
Low & behold, up come a Lizzie 1 farthing, a tiny hammered but a "big" find being the 1st of the day.
Our expectations were high but unfortunately as is often the case NO more hammereds surfaced after gridding the field for the next 5hrs ;Undecided

I did however find the obligatory vast amount of buttons, grotty coppers & junk aswell as a complete thimble, the top half of another, pistol & musket shot & my very 1st Spindle Whorl, Circa 14th C. (Pic below)

Incase a few of you, especially the newbies, are reading this & like myself was/are unsure of the use & purpose of these unusual looking lead items, i`ve included this very informative `You Tube` clip which explains their use below.;Wink

Great thread.
Ironically just come back from Raglan today and had 2 spindle whorls myself. Always nice to find, but after watching this vid makes them all the more interesting. I didnt realise that a stick was put though them. Roll Eyes
Nice one!

intresing program,,,,,ive found my fair share of these and was intrestd to find out that plainer ones are usually older,,,,another tip for those new to the hobby is that the wealthiest of farms were into wool production,so if you find a lot of whorls you shold find a fair amount of coinage etc

Great post Mickey!

Sounds like you had a good day out in Monmouth and the Gold Bug looks the business on the small hammered.

Love the link as well - you could say it is "whorley good"!

I had a couple of nicely decorated ones last year - incredibly hard to date accurately though.
