Title: Stunning Pin? Roman? Need a Doc please
Post by: The Ferret on January 11, 2012, 05:41:23 PM
Hi guys managed to test out one of the fields I have today. Had a Buckle a 1920 penny and this nice artifact. My thoughts are a hair pin or Brooch? It weighs 8 grams has some detail at the top of the head but pics are not showing them. still quit sharp and towards the bottom is oval shape
Cheers
TF

Hi Ferret, my thoughts is that it could maybe be a seal matrix, the flat end being the seal end of course, and the pointed end actually once sat inside a small wooden handle that has now since disappeared? Cheers, Jon

I would be inclined to agree with Seeker in that it's a post medieval seal top spoon handle, but that it's been reused after breaking for another purpose (awl?). ;)

Looks a bit like a pipe tamper to me. They tend to have a flat round end to tamp down tobacco, and a pointy bit to scrape out the burnt tobacco.

Hi Cheff
The stem is similar in style to a 'Fluted baluster' style spoon knop
The one you just posted the link to states that the shank thats missing is normally bent, but this shank is straight but oval shape.
lets just call it a golf tee  ;D ;D
cheers

It is unfortunately one of those items that people will not agree with. If you check all the recorded "pipe tampers" you won't find one (?) that is complete and can be proved to be one, even the two links that PAS record gives tales you to two tampers whose moulding is different. However there are records of complete spoons.
