Some odd prints - anyone ever heard the rhymes before?

Neil:

I recently acquired these two 1960's prints by Ronald Searle (he of the St Trinians and Magnificent Men and Their Flying Machines sillustrations fame).  I didn't pay a lot and planned to move them on as Im not overly keen on them, but they are amusing.

However, I've gotten curious about the rhymes at the bottom of each one.  They are certainly a bit odd.  Can any one shed any light on them? Has anyone ever heard those rhymes before or has the artist made them up?

Cheers
Neil

soz neil got me stumped :o.why dont they put those magnificent men in their flying machines on at xmas anymore?used to laugh my plums off watching that as a youngster on the sherry

Val Beechey:
There is something quite nice about those paintings Neil. They aren't rhyms as such are they. They seem to be extracts from an Apothecarys book. They certainly had some weird ideas about cures in those days. Seems it was thought that tooth ache was thought to be caused by worms in the teeth. One cure was chewing on a clove. They thought it would kill the worm, which would then drop out.
Amazingly I can remember my Grand Mother always had a little bottle of oil of cloves in the medicine box for tooth ache.

Chef Geoff:
Your Grand mother? Val where have you been lol. oil of cloves is still the most effective remedy for toothache and dentists still use it. ;)
