Over on the MDF forum where you put this up yesterday, it was identified as a saxon wrist clasp.

Over on the MDF forum where you put this up yesterday, it was identified as a saxon wrist clasp.

That's what I was hoping it was Alan, but I can't find any with the hollow tube, so thought I would try you guys and get a different perspective !

No I'm afraid it has nothing that makes me think Saxon wrist clasp, firstly it is twice the size of the usual examples, the pattern is a circular meander which is far more Georgian than Saxons the Saxons liked their rings and dots.
I can't tell from the photo whether the tube is fabricated or forged but either way that system of hinge is a much much later affair, the thickness too of the metal seems on the thin side.
My guess would be a hinge from something like a small casket/book 17th century to modern Undecided
