Title: Bassaleg Roman Hoard Post by: Jonola (Jon) on May 15, 2009, 06:03:50 PM On 19 April 1986, a hoard of 904 Roman coins was discovered on agricultural land at Bassaleg, Monmouthshire. The earliest specimen is a silver denarius of Maximinus, minted AD 235-8, with the remaining coins all being base silver antoniniani dating from AD 240-69. Of these 904
coins, 103 were acquired by the National Museum of Wales, 40 by Newport Museum and 761 were returned to the finders. I detected a field in the 70s that had three hoards found in it. West Sussex. I found more .303 than you can shake a stick at...most of it live! Imagine going back to those fields in the 70s with the machines we have now! Apparently there is a marching camp in the vicinity of Bassaleg as well.
