Found this cross shaped thingy today just over 1" square. Luckily I was with a bunch of experts and already have a few ideas as to what it is:

Farmer: Celtic Samurai throwing star
Digger Dave: Tap top
Handyman: Watchamacallit
Me: Thingymajig

But hopefully, someone knows even more than we do Grin

Looks like it has broken suspension loops on either side...

well, having seen it, i'm now thinking its a mount of sorts. 

An interesting find indeed. Though i do like the farmers suggestion best.
