Not to sure on the bird Ian, any chance of a pic of the underside? Buckle looks like the Victorian variety Wink

Well found Dyson. Like the Dove, whatever it was but I think the snake is a Swan.

I have one virtually the same Val, and I like yourself and Dyson would say it was a swan. However, I could not find any references to swan buckles. Only snakes or serpents. Mine I think was Victorian and they were used by the military.

You'll find they are actually listed as "Serpent buckle with beak" you see hell of alot of them on the American forums related to Civil War sites and marked as imported from Britain.

You gave no indication of the size of the bird but looking at the other side makes me wonder, did it fit on a car bonnet ?

Did a search for your swan buckle and there is one on the UK finds site and is listed as 17th to 18th cent. but it's not exactly the same and does look older. It's the 5th item down.

Oh if you want references try this Wink

Certainly not a brooch and Val's shout is a good one though maybe it's a little small, how about a standard or helmet? or maybe the top of a virge (church staff) Huh

That would be a Crosier Geoff  Wink   but as far as I know they always has a stylised hook on the end that represented the shepherds crook.

It could have been off a Mini  Roll Eyes Cheesy
